Week Three of 2019 Pepper Season: Moving On Up
Over this past weekend I set about coming up with my initial final plant list for the 2019 pepper season. I know it’s an oxymoron to have “final” and “initial” in the same descriptor, but I still have a couple of seeds that have yet to pop — and I’m not fully ready to call it quits on them just yet. So while, the list is fairly solid, it could change a bit depending on what happens over the next couple of weeks with those lazy varieties.
At any rate, yesterday I set about repotting those seedlings that were deemed worthy (biggest, healthiest, etc) to move on up to their own pots for the season. I’m using the same potting/starter mix with extra perlite that I used when originally sowing the seeds. The dirt is light and fluffy which allows those roots to expand with ease throughout.
This is always, for me, a stressful time in the season. Perhaps, I’m just being overly cautions with the seedling roots, but I tend to take a really long time in transplanting these little fellas into their own pots. It makes me really nervous to see them out of the dirt like the Cardi Scorpion pictured below.
When all was said and done, however, everyone was happily in their own three inch pots and ready to do some growing. As of this morning, everyone looks healthy and ready to tackle the next several weeks comfortably on my office floor under the grow lights.
As for the line-up of plants that will be going outdoors in early May, here is where we stand (quantity of plants next to their name):
- 7 Pot Primo Yellow (2)
- Aji Cachucha Purple Splotched (1)
- Aji Charapita (2)
- Aji Dulce (1)
- Aji Fantasy (3)
- Aji Lemon (1)
- Aji Rico (3)
- Bequinho (2)
- Carbonero (3)
- Cardi Scorpion (3)
- Carolina Reaper (1)
- Criolla Sella (1)
- Grenada Seasoning (2)
- Hatch Green Chile (2)

- MA Wartryx (3)
- Pequin Yellow (2)
- Scotch Bonnet – Freeport Orange (2)

That’s 40 plants for those counting, already more than I had planned to grow. Ah well…
