The Way Too Premature 2021 Pepper Season Plan
2020 has, for the most part, been a pretty unforgettable year for many reasons – I won’t get into the pandemic or the U.S. presidential election on this site, and quite frankly, I’m ready to move on. The 2020 pepper season, however, could be considered a success with a few hiccups in the road. Those bumps were covered in my “Lessons Learned” for this past season so if you are interested, check them out.
For the upcoming 2021 pepper growing season, I decided to get a bit more organized, as you can see in the photo below. That said, I still have seeds for way too many pepper varieties and not nearly enough garden space to explore them all in a single season. Choices must be made and priorities set on which type to grow. This is always an annoying process because I am quite impatient at times and really don’t want to have to wait for a future season to grow out a pepper.
With that being said, I’ve got a preliminary list of the pepper varieties that I want to try and grow out this coming season. Let’s see what’s in store for 2021:
- 7 Pot Barrackpore
- 7 Pot Infinity
- Aji Chombo
- Aji Mochero
- BBG7 Dream
- Bhut Jolokia Assam
- PBJ x Neyde
- Bhut Orange Coppenhagen
- Big Black Mama
- Bih Jolokia Caramel
- Blue Christmas
- Brazilian Starfish
- BTR Scorpion
- Buena Mulata
- Chocolate Butch T
- Chocolate Ghost WHP
- Comstock Purple
- Hatch
- Jalapeno
- Lava Scorpion
- Lava Scorpion Chocolate
- Mako Akokosrade
- Melon Rocoto
- Naglah Beast (red)
- Naglah Brown
- Paradiscsom Alaku Sarga Szentes
- Peppapeach
- Pimenta Moranga Peach Cross
- Pimenta Puma
- Pink Tiger
- Scotch Bonnet Choc
- Sugar Rush Cream
- Sugar Rush Peach
- Testanera
- Thai Dragon
- Tovarii
- Tshololo Pepper
If you’ve been following along in previous seasons, you may notice that there are several on this list that have appeared in previous premature grow lists. The reason for their return is that I am giving them a second chance. Peppers like the Barrackpore, BOC, BBM and a few others never germinated in prior grow seasons. I’m allowing them one more opportunity before they are removed from the seed inventory and replaced with either a refresh of the seeds or a new variety altogether. I’ve also created a wider range of heat levels as well as tossed in an ornamental for fun.
You’ll also see that, as usual, I have the Jalapeno and Hatch that I grow every year, as well as a couple that I’m growing out again due to depleted freezer stock – Sugar Rush Peach and Thai Dragon. As for the rest of the list (new and second chance seeds), all will all be new to me.
I’m not sure how I will organize the seedlings once they are ready to move outdoors. Typically I give each raised bed a fun name – I’ve Scotchtowne, Wonka’s Nightmare, etc – based on the plants residing in them, but as of right now, I’m not sure which plants will go where. I’ll have to play around with the list some and see what we can do. As for right now, I’m just really excited for February to get here so I can start sowing these seeds!
